Chris Scales, Store ManagerChris has worked in the bicycle industry since 1994, accumulating a huge volume of cycling expertise along the way. Chris enjoys an active cycling lifestyle, competing in Road, Time trial, Cyclocross and Mountain biking. Chris brings his love of cycling to work with him each day, helping BikeBeat customers find the best bike to suit their needs, and all of the cycling gear to get the most out of riding. |

Rodney Martin, Service ManagerRod has been working on bikes since the turn of the last century ~ as a personal friend of Orville and Wilbur Wright, he learned the finer points of "safety" bike mechanics at their feet! More recently in the 1970's, he trained at Shimano and Campagnolo's technical schools. He is also a USCF (now USA cycling) certified mechanic, and a regionally recognized bike fit guru. When not at BikeBeat, he enjoys road riding and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. |

Avanell Schmitz, Assistant Store ManagerAvanell practically grew up at BikeBeat. Her older sister Beneline worked at the Williamsburg store in it's early years and got Avanell hooked on mountain biking. Now a college graduate (Longwood - Music Education), Avanell is continuing the family tradition of turning people on to the sport of cycling. When not helping people pick the perfect bike or accessory, Avanell can be found hitting the trails or competing in her favorite sport ~ cyclocross. An accomplished road, mountain, and cyclocross competitor, Avanell is a Cat 2 cyclist on the Tradwinds Racing women's team.

Matthew Bailey, Service CenterA Professional Mountain Biker since 2007, Matthew comes to BikeBeat with a bachelors degree in Kinesiology (University of Colorado) and a background in Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He has successfully applied his knowledge of biomechanics to understanding bike mechanics and uses his skills as a pro cyclist to mentor new cyclists. When Matthew isn't on or around bikes, he enjoys spending time with his daughter Olivia. |

Alan Dawkins, SalesBikeBeat's resident Triathlete, Alan is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and a mild mannered financial planner with Lincoln Financial by day. Come Saturday, you will find him on a bike going fast, very fast. Alan enjoys Triathlon and road racing, and enjoys sharing his knowledge and expertise with BikeBeat customers. If you are interested in trying out the sport of Triathlon, Alan is your guy. Off of the bike, Alan enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, and their fuzzy trio of pets. |

Join the BikeBeat staff for lively group rides year round. All shop rides are intended for road bikes. Helmets are required.
B-pace: This is a 29 mile ride with an 18 mph end average, depending on the group. A+ meets at the same time, so verify that you are with the B group before you start.
A+ Pace: This is a 40 mile, fast A+ race training ride best suited for very strong riders who enjoy a challenging ride.
Saturday Mornings at 7:45 AM, Women's Ride from BikeBeat
This is ladies only, leader-directed group ride intended to help new riders increase their group riding skills and build fitness and endurance, and a good fitness ride for veteran riders. This is a 22 mile no-drop ride at a C/B pace depending on the group. Avanell provides coaching and skills instruction during the ride. Road bikes are strongly recommended (not hybrid or mountain). A local favorite led by Rodney, this ride meets at the Newport News Panera Bread across from CNU. The Squirrel Scalper is a 22 mile A pace ride, but can accommodate even A+ riders. Riders regroup at Panera after the ride for a social hour with bagels and coffee. Ride meets only when temperatures are above 40 degrees and roads are dry. Lights may be necessary during the spring and fall.

Kiln Creek BikeBeat holds Get To Know Your Bike Nights every week March thru September, and once a month October thru February. Classes are at 8pm Thursdays (7pm in January and February). Call ahead to be sure we have space, as we're limited to about 7 students. Children 8 and up are welcome when accompanied by a parent.

Park Tool School is currently offered at the Yorktown BikeBeat at Kiln Creek 3-4 times a year. This is a comprehensive course in bicycle repair and maintenance, complete with a Park Tool School Student Manual and Park Certificate of completion. The class meets for two hours each Tuesday for four weeks and provides in-depth instruction that will enable you to overhaul and maintain your own bike. Tuition is $120.00.
