Chris Scales, Store Manager
Chris has worked in the bicycle industry since 1994, accumulating a huge volume of cycling expertise along the way. Chris enjoys an active cycling lifestyle, competing in Road, Time trial, Cyclocross and Mountain biking. Chris brings his love of cycling to work with him each day, helping BikeBeat customers find the best bike to suit their needs, and all of the cycling gear to get the most out of riding.
Rodney Martin, Service Manager
Rod has been working on bikes since the turn of the last century ~ as a personal friend of Orville and Wilbur Wright, he learned the finer points of "safety" bike mechanics at their feet! More recently in the 1970's, he trained at Shimano and Campagnolo's technical schools. He is also a USCF (now USA cycling) certified mechanic, and a regionally recognized bike fit guru. When not at BikeBeat, he enjoys road riding and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Join the BikeBeat staff for lively group rides year round. All shop rides are intended for road bikes. Helmets are required.
A+ Pace: This is a 40 mile, fast A+ race training ride best suited for very strong riders who enjoy a challenging ride.
Thursday Nights 8:30pm "Misery Loves Company Ride"
Join Chris for a 8:30 pm roll-out ride from the parking lot in front of BikeBeat for laps around Kiln Creek. Eight to 10 laps, all paces are welcome to attend, but will split into groups based on pace as necessary. Headlights and taillights required.
A local favorite led by Rodney, this ride meets at the Newport News Panera Bread across from CNU. The Squirrel Scalper is a 22 mile A-pace ride, but tends to form subgroups and can accommodate riders from a B to A+ pace. Riders regroup at Panera after the ride for a social hour with bagels and coffee. Ride meets only when temperatures are above 40 degrees and roads are dry. Lights required by law on every bike during low light conditions during the spring and fall.
Kiln Creek BikeBeat holds Get To Know Your Bike Nights every other week March thru September, and once a month October thru February. Classes are at 7pm Thursdays. Call ahead to be sure we have space, as we're limited to about 7 students. Children 8 and up are welcome when accompanied by a parent.
Park Tool School is currently offered at the Yorktown BikeBeat at Kiln Creek 3-4 times a year.
